Snapdragon vs MediaTek: Which Chipset Should You Choose?
The chipset brand matters less than reputation suggests — here's what actually drives real-world performance.
A reputation gap that no longer matches reality
For years, Snapdragon was seen as the premium choice and MediaTek as the budget option reserved for cheap phones. That gap was real, but it has narrowed considerably. Recent Dimensity chips now compete seriously with Snapdragon silicon in mid-range and even flagship phones, with CPU and GPU performance that's often very close both on paper and in daily use.
What actually matters, beyond the name
The chipmaker's name alone tells you very little. Two things matter more: the chip's generation (a Snapdragon or Dimensity flagship from two or three years ago will age worse than a recent mid-range chip) and how well the phone maker has optimized the software around it. The exact same chipset can behave very differently from one phone to another depending on thermal management and software tuning.
Gaming and GPU performance: where a real gap remains
This is probably where the difference between the two brands is still most visible in entry and mid-range phones: Qualcomm's Adreno GPUs have historically had an edge over MediaTek's Mali-based GPUs in demanding games, though flagship Dimensity chips have largely closed that gap. If gaming is a priority, check the specific GPU benchmarks for the model you're considering rather than trusting the brand name alone.
5G modems and market positioning
Both companies now ship reliable 5G modems across nearly all their recent chips, including entry-level ones. The more meaningful difference is market positioning: Qualcomm has traditionally dominated the global high end, while MediaTek leads the mid-range and budget segments, with a growing presence at the top through its Dimensity 9000 series and beyond.
