iPad Pro: battery safety, what to know before any repair

A real risk, not just a formality

A damaged or mishandled lithium-ion battery can trigger a thermal event: a rapid chemical reaction capable of causing fire, injury, data loss, or destroying the device and its surroundings. Smoke, sparks, sudden swelling, or a hissing sound are the warning signs worth knowing.

Before doing anything

Only trained technicians with the right tools should replace an iPad battery. The battery must be fully discharged before repair — a charged battery is statistically more prone to a thermal event. The workspace must be non-flammable, ESD-safe, away from anything combustible, with sand and a fireproof enclosure within reach.

Gearing up properly

Heat-resistant gloves and safety glasses are essential. The battery must never be punctured, struck, crushed, or dropped.

If something goes wrong

If a thermal event happens anyway, immediately smother the battery with clean, dry sand, contact emergency services if needed, and place the device in a fireproof enclosure for at least two hours before disposal.
