Repairing your own MacBook Pro: the battery safety precautions
Why a damaged battery can catch fire, and how a DIY repairer needs to be equipped before touching it.
A damaged lithium battery isn't something to take lightly
A damaged or mishandled built-in battery can trigger a rapid chemical chain reaction: smoke or sparks, sudden swelling, hissing or popping sounds — with a real risk of fire, injury, or destroying the device.
Before doing anything
The battery must be fully discharged before repair: a charged battery is statistically more prone to a thermal event. The workspace must be non-flammable, ESD-safe, at least 60 cm from anything combustible, with sand and a fireproof container within reach.
Gearing up properly
Heat-resistant gloves and safety glasses are essential. The battery must never be punctured, crushed, or struck; it should stay covered while exposed, and no sharp tools should be left lying nearby.
If something goes wrong
If a thermal event happens anyway, immediately smother the battery with clean, dry sand, ventilate the room, call emergency services if needed, and leave the device in a fireproof enclosure for at least two hours. This kind of repair remains a job for experienced technicians with the right tools.
