What you gain and what you give up at this price
Under $500, drop the idea of getting "everything": a periscope telephoto, a huge main sensor, and stabilized 8K video almost never coexist at this price point. What is realistic is a genuinely good main sensor, an effective software night mode, and solid 4K video in daylight. The right question isn't "what's missing compared to a $1,200 flagship" but "what's the best tradeoff for how I actually use the camera."
One good main sensor beats four pointless ones
Plenty of phones at this price proudly list a "quad camera" on the back, but in practice two or three of those sensors (a 2MP macro, a depth sensor) do very little and mostly exist as a marketing bullet point. A phone with one genuinely good main sensor and a decent ultrawide will beat a stack of low-end sensors every time. Check the physical size of the main sensor (often listed in inches, like 1/1.56 inch) rather than how many cameras are listed.
Software night mode partly makes up for a smaller sensor
At this budget, sensors are physically smaller than on flagship phones, so they naturally gather less light. That's exactly where night mode processing makes the difference: a good multi-frame exposure algorithm can close much of the low-light gap through software alone. Before buying, look for real sample night photos from the specific model rather than trusting the sensor spec sheet by itself.
Prioritize based on what you actually shoot
If you mostly take everyday family photos in daylight, nearly any phone in this range will do fine. If you want zoom for events or sports, look specifically for a true optical 2x or 3x zoom rather than a digital crop marketed as "10x zoom." And if video matters to you, check electronic stabilization first, since OIS is rare at this price tier.
