How to Choose a Laptop for Video Editing
A video-editing laptop shares components with a gaming laptop, but you shouldn't be shopping for the same reasons.

Video editing isn't a gaming workload
A "video editing" laptop and a "gaming" laptop often list the same specs — a powerful processor, a dedicated GPU, plenty of RAM — but those components get pushed in very different ways. A gamer mostly wants a high refresh rate and maximum frame rate in one specific game. A video editor needs a workflow that stays stable for hours: smooth timeline playback, real-time effects preview, and then a final export that doesn't grind the machine to a halt or balloon your waiting time.
The display: color accuracy before refresh rate
For editing, a screen's color accuracy matters more than how fast it refreshes. Good coverage of a wide color gamut (P3 or a high sRGB percentage) and low color drift (a low Delta E) let you judge your grading and color corrections properly right on the machine, without unpleasant surprises once the video is exported and watched on a different screen. A flashy but poorly calibrated panel can lead you to "fix" footage that was already fine — or miss a problem that was really there.
GPU, RAM, and storage: the trio that speeds up exports
A dedicated GPU accelerates video encoding and decoding as well as effects rendering during preview — a recent GPU with solid hardware acceleration for common codecs (H.264, HEVC, ProRes) noticeably cuts export times. RAM mainly keeps multiple 4K or 8K tracks with effects scrubbing smoothly on the timeline without lag; 16GB is a viable minimum, and 32GB brings real comfort once a project gets complex. Finally, fast NVMe storage makes a huge difference reading and writing large video files — a traditional hard drive or slow storage quickly becomes the real bottleneck, well before the processor is.
Heat: the quiet enemy of long exports
A benchmark that runs for a few minutes tells you nothing about what happens during a full hour-long export. Under sustained load, many laptops automatically throttle performance to avoid overheating, which can double export times compared to the numbers advertised at launch. The chassis's thermal design — fan count, heatsink quality, airflow room — matters at least as much as the raw specs of the components inside.
