A top-load washing machine loads while standing, without bending over, and often lets you toss in a forgotten item mid-cycle — a real plus for some households, usually at the cost of a somewhat smaller capacity. The right choice mostly comes down to physical constraints and daily habits, far more than any quality hierarchy between the two formats.
Drum capacity should match your household, not the other way around
A 6-7kg capacity suits a single person or couple, 8kg comfortably covers a family of 3-4, and you should aim for 9kg or more for a larger household or if you regularly wash bulky items (duvets, bedding). A drum that's too small for your real needs will push you to run more cycles, which quickly cancels out the apparent savings of a cheaper machine.
Energy rating and the real long-term cost
The price tag in the store only represents a fraction of a washing machine's total cost: over 8 to 10 years of use, cumulative water and electricity consumption can easily exceed the price gap between two models. A machine with a better energy rating often costs more upfront, but that gap usually pays for itself within a few years of regular use — worth calculating before letting the sticker price alone decide.
Spin speed, noise, and reliability
A high spin speed (1200 RPM or more) reduces how much moisture stays in the laundry, cutting down the drying time that follows, but often comes with more vibration and noise at the end of the cycle. The decibel rating is worth comparing if the machine sits near a living space or a bedroom. Finally, long-term reliability depends a lot on routine maintenance (regularly cleaning the door seal and detergent drawer, descaling) as much as on the brand itself — a well-maintained budget machine often outlasts a neglected premium one.
