iPad Pro: diagnosing sound issues

Silent speakers, a mic that picks up poorly, distorted audio: the checking method before suspecting a fault.

iPad Pro: diagnosing sound issues

The most common symptoms

Missing or distorted sound from the speakers or headphones, audio coming through only one channel, or a failing microphone during a call or recording — these are the main audio issues worth knowing.

The basic checks

Check the volume level using the device's controls. Remove any case or screen protector that might obstruct sound. Clean the speaker and microphone openings with a dry, soft brush and a microfiber cloth — never compressed air or moisture on these specific areas.

Moving on to built-in tests

If the basic checks aren't enough, run the diagnostic suites dedicated to the microphone and speakers. Testing with wired headphones or a USB-C audio device also helps verify that audio switching works correctly.

What a repair involves

For a microphone issue, replacing the display (or the display and cover glass) may be necessary depending on the model. For a speaker issue, the whole device typically needs replacing — it's best to go through the official repair service once the basic checks are exhausted.
