iPad Pro: diagnosing display issues

A black screen, flickering, colors that look off: the checks to run before suspecting the panel itself.

iPad Pro: diagnosing display issues

Three distinct symptom categories

Display problems cover a blank or flickering screen, degraded image quality or inconsistent colors, but also physical defects like particles under the glass or pixels that look faulty. Poorly responsive Multi-Touch and screen rotation that stops working are two separate categories worth knowing.

The basic checks

Remove any case and screen protector, using finger pads rather than nails. Clean the display with a soft, slightly damp cloth — on nano-texture models, use only the included polishing cloth, since no other fabric works properly.

Telling a charging problem apart from a real display issue

Facing a fully black screen, charging the device with an Apple power adapter for ten minutes helps rule out a simple power issue before digging further.

Moving on to advanced diagnostics

If the basic checks don't resolve anything, running the Mobile Resource Inspector diagnostic suite lets you go further. On the newest models, replacing the display or the cover glass may become necessary if diagnostics don't resolve the problem; for other models, support.apple.com/repair is the place to check available repair options.
