MacBook Pro: diagnosing battery, startup, and sleep issues
Unexpected shutdowns, a screen that won't wake, a computer that won't start: how to tell a software issue apart from a real hardware failure.

Battery and power adapter
A faulty adapter, a damaged cable, a worn charging port, or an aging battery are the most common causes. First move: plug in a compatible Apple USB-C power adapter and let it charge for about ten minutes to check basic power works, inspecting the ports along the way for debris or visible damage.
Unexpected shutdowns or instability
This kind of symptom usually comes from a thermal issue, a failing battery, or a software conflict. Noting exactly when the shutdown happens helps spot a recurring pattern. Starting in safe mode reveals whether software is the culprit rather than hardware.
Sleep and wake issues
A faulty lid angle sensor, a display connection issue, or poor power management can be responsible. First make sure the computer isn't simply powered off rather than asleep, by opening the display and pressing a key.
Startup issues
Corrupted software, hardware damage, or incomplete firmware are the most frequent leads. Before considering a hardware repair, always try to revive or restore the Mac's firmware first, making sure the battery has enough charge beforehand.
