The screen, battery, and camera matter more than the number of processor cores — here's what to focus on before you buy.

How to choose a smartphone in 2026

Start from how you'll use it, not the spec sheet

A smartphone should be chosen based on how you'll actually use it, not a list of numbers. Someone who takes lots of photos of their kids has very different needs from someone who plays demanding games, or someone who just wants a reliable phone for four years.

Before comparing spec sheets, ask yourself three questions: how long do you want to keep it, what's your real budget (accessories and insurance included), and what's the one feature you absolutely don't want to compromise on (camera, battery life, gaming, or just reliability)?

Battery life matters more than raw power

Past a certain power threshold, most people can't tell the difference between two recent processors in everyday use. Battery life, on the other hand, can vary enormously between two phones in the same range — check the battery capacity (in mAh) and, if possible, real-world battery tests rather than just the manufacturer's spec sheet.

Fast charging (measured in watts) also makes a big everyday difference: a phone that recharges 50% in 15 minutes saves you a lot of battery anxiety, even with a more modest capacity.

Camera: the megapixel count barely tells you anything

A 200 MP sensor isn't automatically better than a well-optimized 50 MP one — the software image processing matters as much as the sensor itself. If photography is your priority, look at real sample photos taken with the phone in different lighting conditions instead of relying on the spec sheet alone.

Use the comparison tool to decide

Once you've narrowed it down to 2-4 models that fit your budget, the most effective approach is to put them side by side in the comparison tool. The "Best camera" or "Best battery life" guided mode automatically weighs the technical criteria based on your priority, and highlights the model that performs best on that specific point instead of leaving you to guess from a table of numbers.
