MacBook Pro running hot or noisy: what's normal and what isn't

A fan that spins up, a case that vibrates slightly, a laptop that won't sit flat: how to tell expected behavior apart from a real warning sign.

MacBook Pro running hot or noisy: what's normal and what isn't

More noticeable heat and fan noise — normal in some cases

A MacBook Pro can legitimately get warmer and louder under heavy use, but also during initial setup or background Spotlight indexing. A slight hum from the power adapter is normal too.

Signs that deserve a closer look

Unusual heat, a burning smell, excessive fan noise, or noticeable vibration warrant further investigation: try a different power adapter, make sure ventilation is adequate, unplug connected peripherals, check for signs of liquid, and use Activity Monitor to spot an app consuming an abnormal amount of resources.

A laptop that won't sit flat

A MacBook should sit still on a hard, flat surface. A wobbly unit might simply be sitting on an uneven surface — worth checking first — or point to internal damage or a misaligned bottom case, sometimes fixed by removing and reseating it.

If the problem persists after these checks

An internal inspection can confirm the fans are working properly and there's no dust buildup; replacing a fan or the bottom case may then be necessary, ideally confirmed with Apple's diagnostic tools.
